A start was made in 1968 on archiving documents of the United Methodist Church Zimbabwe Episcopal area when the General Board of Global Ministries set up the Archives Offices and research rooms at Old Mutare Mission. The church archives for Zimbabwe continued to operate from Old Mutare Mission until the Kent M. Weeks History and Archives Hall was opened within the Jokomo / Yamada Library in 2001. The main Library and the Archives are similar in many ways, needless to say both are research entities; whereas the Library collect current information for research, the Archives collects historical information for research.

The Kent Weeks Archives collects and preserves key Africa University and United Methodist Church (UMC) publications and related resources which are deemed to be of historic and research value. The Archives has since become a hive of activity for academic researchers requiring access to primary sources. Patrons include Africa University student and staff researchers and those from other universities; from all parts of Zimbabwe and from overseas, as well as members of the general public coming from different denominations. Many visitors have come in blocks just to familiarise themselves with the Archives. The Archives is currently digitising its existing print-based collections for preservation and easy access.
